Just moments after being announced as the KJCCC Player of the Week on Wednesday morning, Seward County sophomore centerfielder Bryson Allen topped that award by being named the NJCAA National Player of the Week.
Allen hit .529 for the Saints in five games this week and reached base in 14 of 22 at bats. He hammered out 2 doubles, a triple, and 3 home runs, while driving in 8 runs on the week. Wednesday against Frank Phillips, Allen helped the Saints knock off the Plainsmen by going 2 for 4 with 2 home runs while scoring 3 runs in the one run win. As the Saints turned their sights back to conference play on Saturday, he missed hitting for the cycle by just a double in game two of Seward’s doubleheader with Butler, finishing 3 for 4 with a triple, a home run, and 4 RBI’s. Sunday against the Grizzlies he picked up a pair of doubles, going 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored in game three of the series and was 1 for 2 with a walk in the series finale.
With his three bagger in Saturday’s game, Allen has now broken the school’s all-time triples record which he has set at 16 and counting. Allen is third on the team, hitting .377 on the year and is also third in doubles with 15 while rankings second on the Saints squad in triples and home runs with 5 and 6 respectively.
Allen is the second Saint to win National Player of the Week honors after catcher Brent Williams garnered them earlier this season. Seward is now only the second school in the country to have two players named National Player of the Week this season, joining fellow Jayhawk member Coffeyville who has seen Chase Rader earn the award twice.
Allen and the Saints will be on the road for the Region VI Tournament on Saturday when they travel to Chanute for a best out of three series with the Neosho County Panthers.
Seward opens play in the Region 6 Tournament Saturday at 1 at Neosho on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
