The Seward County Lady Saints had to wait a while to do it, but after tying the school’s all-time single season wins record with a victory over Jacksonville on April 4th, the Lady Saints snapped a four match losing streak in a big way on Saturday in Hillsboro, Kansas, knocking off Tabor 5-4 to stand alone atop the record books with their 7th team win of the season.

The Lady Saints began their day with a dual with Bethany and got out to a good start, winning two of three doubles matches to gain a 2-1 advantage. Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos easily took down the Swedes top team 8-2 as did Kathryn Roohan and Naomie Bukassa at #2 doubles, again by an 8-2 count to give Seward a 2-0 lead. Bethany got a point back at #3 singles where they were able to breeze to an 8-1 win over Seward’s Grace Golden and Rosalba Morales.

As usual the Lady Saints were solid at the top of their singles lineup as Lopez and Coyos lost just one set in their two matches at #1 and #2 to put Seward on the doorstep of a win as they took a 4-1 lead. But back came the Swedes who won matches at #3 and #4 singles to make it a 4-3 contest and then picked up an 8-5 win at #6 to tie it at 4. It all came down to the point at #3 singles where Bethany prevailed 8-6 to take the match 5-4.

The Lady Saints had one more chance to bring home the record all to themselves and this time they cashed in. Again Lopez and Coyos dominated at #1 doubles, this time pitching an 8-0 shutout for Seward’s first point of the match. In #2 doubles Roohan and Bukassa teamed once again for victory, this time in an 8-3 decision to give the Lady Saints a 2-0 advantage. Tabor got their first point of the day in #3 doubles where they pulled off an 8-2 win to cut Seward’s lead to 2-1 as the teams went to singles.

Lopez and Coyos had no trouble in their matches at #1 and #2, each winning 8-2 to make it 4-1 in favor of Seward while the Blue Jays picked up an 8-1 win at #6 singles to cut the Lady Saints lead to 4-2. Tabor won 8-4 battles at #4 and #5 singles to knot things up at 4 and once again the point at #3 was the decider. This time is was Roohan coming out on top of an 8-4 decision over Karly Yates to seal the match, giving the Lady Saints the 5-4 victory in the match, their seventh of the year to set the school record.
