After being named the KJCCC Baseball Player of the Week on Wednesday, Seward County redshirt freshman catcher Brent Williams got an even bigger honor on Friday as it was announced by the NJCAA that he had been selected as the NJCAA Division I National Player of the Week.
Williams had yet another unbelievable week for the Saints last week, hitting .737 with 8 doubles, a triple, and a home run, while driving in 13 runs in five Seward games. Wednesday against Clarendon he was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, missing the cycle by just a home run in a 25-20 Seward loss. Saturday in game one of the Saints series with Pratt he was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored in an 8-4 Seward win and in game two of the double header he was 3 for 3 with 3 doubles and also drove in 4 runs in a 19-5 Saints romp over the Beavers. Sunday he didn’t slow down, going 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored in game three with the Beavers and he finished the series with a 4 for 5 game where he doubled twice more and also hit a home run and drove in 6.
In his big week, Williams broke the Saints all-time single season doubles record which now stands at 26 after it was held by Bruce Brantley for 14 years with a mark of 24. On the year Williams is hitting .415 with 26 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs, and 44 RBI’s. He is the team leader in batting average, hits, runs, doubles, home runs, RBI’s, total bases, extra base hits, and hit by pitches.
