Youth is Served in LHS Softball Program

KSCB News - April 1, 2014 1:22 pm

After leaning on a group which made up the core of the LHS softball team the last several years, five key players graduated last year. Plus a starter transferred out of LHS. Fifth year head coach Pat Knott may have his most challenging building job yet. LHS has won three, six, nine, and seven is his first four seasons. But this year only two starters return from a team which was 7-14.

Knott has 42 players out for softball but says only about 15 have played before. Sophomore pitcher Brittany Granger and senior shortstop Stephanie Sanchez are the top returning players. Sanchez moves to the infield from centerfield. LHS also expects to start four freshman including two up the middle in catcher Aspen Bensik and centerfielder and pitcher Jordan Granger. Third baseman Esmerelda Garcia and outfielder Alize Tatum are starters. Key sophomores are second baseman Jordan Urban and outfielder Marina Arenivas. Other key players are junior first baseman Emily Castaneda, senior first baseman Katie Jennings, junior shortstop Amanda Garcia, senior outfielder Callie Millsap, and junior outfielder Myriam Rubio.

Knott was a guest during the Sportsguys Tuesday morning on 1270. LHS hosts Ulysses to begin the season Tuesday at 4 p.m.
