Redskins Outgun Goddard

Liberal defeated the Goddard Lions in the District 8 opener 64-46 Friday night at the Cornelsen Sports Complex. On a night with the temperature in the 30’s, Liberal blazed a trail through the Lion defense.
Britton Abbott found Trenton Hammond for an eight yard TD at the 10:02 mark and got the two to lead 8-0 at the 10:02 mark. Goddard’s Daniel Weaver kicked a 21 yard field goal to make it 8-3 with 5:23 to play in the first. Abbott found Hammond for a 19 yard TD and the two to lead 16-3 with four minutes to play. Abbott’s 43 yard TD to Hammond made it 24-3 with 1:32 remaining in the first quarter and that score stood at the end of three.
Tucker Vang’s six yard run gave Goddard a TD and made it 24-10. Abbott’s pass into the back of the endzone to Nolan Larkin gave LHS a 30-10 lead with 7:11 to play in the first half. Vang’s 29 yard pass to Austin Chippeaux made it 30-17. But Rex Heronemus ran it in from 11 yards out to lead 36-17 with 2:11 to play in the half. It was Vang to Connor Kirby for a 32 yard TD to make it 36-24. Liberal fumbled at the one with 25 second to play in the half so the score remained 36-24 LHS at the break.
Goddard took 5:30 off the clock on the opening drive of the second half and Beau Fisher’s three yard run made it 36-31. But Abbott hooked up with Hammond for a fourth time on a 56 yard TD. Kirby’s three yard run made it 42-39 with 10 minutes to play. But Hammond returned the kickoff to the 17 and Abbott found Heronemus on a 17 yard swing out pass for a TD to make it 50-39. Abbott recovered a Vang fumble and took it to the 15. Abbott would later score on a one yard TD to make it 58-39 with 6:50 to play. Larkin recovered a fumble and Heronemus added a three yard score to make it 64-39. Vang found Fisher for a 51 yard score.
Liberal had 502 yard while Abbott was 18-30 for six TD’s passing and rushed for 137 yards and a TD. Goddard had 388 yards including 242 on the ground.
Liberal beats Goddard for the 16th time in 17 tries and improves to 4-3 while Goddard is 1-6. LHS plays at 2-5 Goddard Eisenhower Friday night at 7 on 1270 and kscbnews.net. Carroll beat Eisenhower 56-21.
