First Seward Coach’s Clinic a Success

For a first year event, Seward County Basketball coaches
Bryan Zollinger and Toby Wynn couldn’t have asked for much more of a
success at their 2012 Billy’s Basketball Coaches Clinic. The two, along
with Kevin Muff, Men’s coach at Pittsburg State, Krista Gerlich, Women’s
coach at West Texas A&M, and Jeff Evans, Boys coach at Palo Duro High
School, put on an all-day clinic in the Greenhouse, covering every inch
of coaching tactics from pre-practice drills to the full court press.
Fourty-four coaches from every level of basketball
imaginable, made their way to the Greenhouse for the First Annual
Coaches Clinic at Seward County. The group spent Friday getting to know
each other at Billy’s BBQ during the coaches social and got down to
business on Saturday for the event. Starting bright and early at 8:00
am Saturday, the coaches began to soak in the knowledge of some of the
best in the business, starting with Seward County Women’s Head Coach
Toby Wynn. Wynn’s teachings included man to man offensive sets as well
as inbounds plays which he is infamous around the Jayhawk Conference for
perfecting in his years at the helm for the Lady Saints. Next up was
West Texas A&M Women’s Head Coach Krista Gerlich who went over the art
of running an efficient zone offense which has become increasingly
important in today’s game. Kevin Muff, Head Men’s Coach at Pittsburg
State made his return visit to the Greenhouse to explain the art of man
to man defense, rebounding, and toughness to the crowd of on looking
coaches. Legendary Palo Duro High School Boys coach Jeff Evans then put
on a show teaching the full court press and its effectiveness and Seward
County Men’s Head Coach Bryan Zollinger finished up the day by going
over the pick and roll offense and pre-practice drills to improve your
team.
The event was a success in the view of all involved.
Wynn said of the event "we were very pleased in the turnout for the
kickoff of this annual event" he said. "To have 44 coaches from the
area be able to come in here and really take something away from it to
help improve their programs is big for our community and will help
improve even more the quality of basketball in our region" Wynn added.
He finished by saying "we are really looking forward to growing this
event and making it a circled date on the calendar for all of the
coaches around our area. We will continue to bring in big time coaches
to share their expertise and help all of us coaches improve our coaching
skills".
