Redskins Gang Up on Guymon

Everybody played and everybody contributed for the Liberal Redskins in an 80-7 win at Guymon Friday night. The Skins built leads of 35-0 after a quarter, 52-0 at halftime, and 73-0 after three. The Redskins amassed 595 yards and held the Tigers to 187. Redskin quarterback Britton Abbott rushed for 120 yards and four touchdowns and was 10-15 passing for 179 yards and three touchdowns. Cristian Torres ran for 91 yards and J.J. Lewis caught four balls for 92 yards and a TD. LHS did not attempt a pass in the second half.
After the Tigers went three and out on the first possession of the game, Liberal’s first drive ended in a Britton Abbott five yard touchdown at the 9:42 mark. J.J. Lewis caught a 45 yard TD from Abbott at the 7:45 mark. Abbott’s 18 yard TD at the 4:13 mark made it 21-0. Trenton Hammond returned an 82 yards into the north endzone with 2:31 remaining in the quarter and Abbott’s six yard run made it 35-0 after the PAT with 18 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Guymon drove it to the Liberal one to begin the second quarter but a fumble was recovered by Michael Troutner. The ensuing 99 yard drive resulted in an Abbott TD toss to Lorenzo Pando to make it 42-0. Abbott found Hammond for a 39 yard TD with 5:02 to play to make it 49-0. LHS freshman quarterback Jared Hasik then entered the game and threw an interception which deflected off Pando’s hands. But a 42 yard field goal attempt was blocked by Octavio Arredondo. Cody Arellano kicked a 27 yard field goal with two second to play in the first half. It was 52-0 at the half.
The number one offense played one possession of the second half and Abbott finished the drive with an eight yard touchdown. Mershek Wiltshire then blocked a punt which would set up an Eli Altamirano six yard run to make it 66-0 after the PAT with 7:09 to play in the third. Chrystian Symons stripped a ball from a Guymon receiver for a Guymon turnover. Altamirano would race 53 yards for a touchdown several plays later to make it 73-0 with 2:51 to play in the third.
GHS quarterback Jacob Test found Alex Zakrewiez for a 35 yard TD with 10:20 to play in the game. Guymon would then recover a Liberal fumble for Liberal’s second turnover. But Liberal’s Aaron Green would intercept a pass. Caleb Wehling’s one yard quarterback sneak with 4:52 to play made it 80-7 after the PAT.
Liberal has won 13 straight against Guymon dating back to a 35-0 loss in 1989. The Skins play one of their own Friday as LHS grad Ryan Cornelsen’s 1-1 Hays Indians welcome the Redskins for their home opener at Lewis Field. Cornelsen is 24-6 at Hays and led them to their first playoff appearance since 1995 when he helped Liberal beat Hays in the playoffs. Legendary former LHS coach Gary Cornelsen who was 118-17 and won four state titles in Liberal with three runner up finishes is assisting his son after coaching eight years in Amarillo.
