Guymon Ready for 5A Slate
KSCB News - August 16, 2012 4:15 pm
After a long run in class 4A, the Guymon Tigers are in uncharted waters. The Tigers move up to 5A this season. The Tigers appear to be headed the right direction in trying to play bigger schools with bigger rosters. After they had only 35 players on the team last year, Guymon is up to 54 players as of Wednesday which was also the first day of school at GHS. And unlike last year, their coach didn’t leave them in the summer only to meet a new coach right before fall drills. Bryan Ballard enters his second year as head coach and was able to spend a full offseason in the Tigers Den. The Tigers were 1-9 last year but most players look at this season as an opportunity to see different competition after some lean years in 4A. The Tigers, who won the 1987 3A state championship are 4-36 since back to back playoff seasons 2006 and 2007. The Tigers figure some new blood may do them some good.
The Tigers have a new quarterback this season as the aptly named sophomore quarterback Jacob Test. His biggest weapons are expected to be junior wr/qb/db Austin Stonecypher; junior rb/ilb Carter Hudson; senior rb/olb Clay Brooks; and junior wr/db Alex Zakrzewicz. Senior offensive lineman and linebacker Arthor Rico is one of the team’s unquestioned leaders.
