Deverell Big Time for Seward
KSCB News - April 10, 2012 1:55 pm
Seward County sophomore guard Deverell Biggs has brought
home enough awards over the past few weeks to fill a small car, but
Tuesday, he picked up one that is sure to top the list as the Saints
star was named a 1st Team All-American by the NJCAA, becoming the first
Seward player to be named a 1st Team All-American since Devonne Giles
did so when Biggs was in just 5th grade in 2003.
Biggs led the Saints in scoring this season at 14.6
points per game as well as in assists with 3.1 per contest and steals at
3.3 per game. He was the Jayhawk West and Region VI Player of the Year
as he upped his game in 16 conference contests to average 16.4 points
per game and 3.9 steals per game for the Conference Champion Saints.
Biggs was the Region VI Tournament MVP as he led the Saints to their
second National Tournament appearance in five years when he put up 14.0
points and 3.3 assists in Seward’s sweep through the postseason
tournament. This season Biggs became just the second player in school
history to accumulate over 100 assists and 100 steals in a year, putting
his name with legendary Saint Carlo Walton in that category.
With the 1st Team All-American honor, Biggs becomes just
the second player in school history to be named a 1st Team All-American,
Region VI Tournament Most Valuable Player, Region VI Most Valuable
Player, and Jayhawk West Most Valuable Player in the same season in
school history.
The only other Jayhawk Conference player to be named to
the All-American team was Barton’s Algie Key who received 3rd Team
honors, while former Saint Rafriel Guthrie was named an Honorable
Mention pick for the College of Southern Idaho.
