Saints Drop Midweek Game in Borger
KSCB News - March 30, 2012 6:21 am
Things went from bad to worse Wednesday afternoon in
Borger, Texas for the Seward County Saints baseball team as they
followed a conference series loss to last place Dodge City with an 8-2
loss to a Frank Phillips, a team that the Saints easily handled in a
double header one month ago.
Seward fell behind early after a double play ball was
botched on defense in the bottom of the 1st and allowed Frank Phillips
to score two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Saints couldn’t get anything
going on offense and had just one hit as the game went to the 6th with
the Plainsmen still on top 2-0. After the Saints failed to get anything
going once again, Frank Phillips added onto their advantage with three
runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-0. In the 7th it was the
same story as the Saints put up a goose egg and the Plainsmen tacked on
three more to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The Saints had something
going for the first time in the game in the 8th but a popout left the
bases loaded to keep it an 8-0 game. Seward avoided being shutout for
the first time this season as they strung together two runs in the 9th
but it was much too little too late as they fell 8-2. Carlos Dorado was
the only Saint to have a two hit game in the loss as he finished 2 for
4, while Tanner Rainey and Ben Wainwright drove in the Seward runs.
Gavin Glanz worked two scoreless innings out of the Saints bullpen and
Johnny Griffith pitched 1 1/3 innings and had the Saints only strikeout
on the mound in the game.
The loss drops the Saints to 16-18 overall on the season
and they have now lost 5 of their last 6. However, they have a chance
to turn things around this weekend when they return home to Brent Gould
Field to take on archrivals Garden City in a four game Jayhawk West
series on Saturday and Sunday starting at 1:00.
