Seward Makes History with Conference Crown
KSCB News - March 1, 2012 7:28 am
Seward head coach Bryan Zollinger was emotional after the Seward 79-51 win over Butler Wednesday night in the Green House. The Johnson native and fifth year head coach knows how difficult this is. He won the conference as a player in 1985, an assistant coach in 1995, and as a head coach now in three of his five seasons as head coach (2008, 2011, and 2012). For the first time in school history, the Saints have won back to back conference titles. Sophomores Irvin Hollinger and Daveon Boardingham and coach Zollinger now stand alone in Seward history.
Butler was standing in the way of the Saints Wednesday night. The Grizzlies are 3-12 in the Jayhawk West, but nine of those losses were by single digits. But not Wednesday night. The Saints jumped to a 38-22 halftime lead and led by as many as 30 in route to the win.
Daveon Boardingham scored 17 while Edson Avila added 15 points and nine rebounds and Deverell Biggs scored 15 points with six rebounds and five assists. Hollinger added 11.
The Saints defense continued to shine holding the Grizzlies (9-20, 3-12) to 26 percent shooting and forcing 26 turnovers. The thirteenth ranked Saints shot 49 percent and made 22 of 28 free throws.
Seward faces #19 Hutchinson in the Hutchinson Sports Arena Saturday at 7:30 on B107.5 and kscbnews.net.
