Redskin Soccer Makes Key Addition

As it turns out, they were just fine without him. When Eduardo Moreno left the LHS soccer team last season, the Redskins would shrug off that loss to finish as the runner-up in class 5A. Moreno pursued a professional opportunity and this summer trained with Sporting Kansas City training with the first team and playing with the reserves. Eduardo is back to help the Redskins this season as they look to keep the ball rolling. Liberal has won 10 straight WAC titles and advanced to the final 4 eight times in the last nine years.
Fourteenth year head coach Lori Navarro refuses to consider any season a rebuilding season. Most programs would consider this situation to be just that. Liberal lost 12 seniors from last years’ 17-2-1 team. Key Redskins include senior forward Eduardo Moreno and senior forward Isai Gutierrez. Isai was a first team all state player last year for the Redskins. The team returns only two starters, Gutierrez and senior sweeper Joe Campos will anchor the defense. Junior Alvin Portillo moves from offense to stopper and the goalie is junior Ricardo Castro. Senior stopper Jose Guerrero helps the defense.
Liberal opens Thursday at 4 p.m. for the JV game and the varsity game at about 5:45 against Great Bend at Redskin Field. It’s the only home game this month for LHS.
