Two Out Turmoil Plagues Saints

It was the deepest run ever for the Seward County baseball team. But the way it ended will left a deep void for a team which experienced a successful season. Potomac State, West Virginia scored all 12 of their runs with two outs in a 12-11 win over Seward Tuesday afternoon at Sam Suplizio Field in Grand Junction. The Saints committed two errors and allowed six unearned runs in the loss. The Saints finish 46-20 and sixth in the JUCO World Series.

The "Guys in Green" handed their ace Logan Hall leads of 5-0 into the bottom of the third and 8-3 into the bottom of the fourth. A two RBI double by Willie Gustin in the second gave the Saints a 4-0 lead. Jordan Dallalio followed up a second inning double off the wall in center with a solo homer to right in the third to make it 5-0 Saints. The Catamounts scored three unearned runs in the third after an E-4 and a controversial "safe" call at first base on an attempted Saints double play.

Seward got the three runs right back when Jake Barrios ripped an inside the park home run to left center when the Potomac State center field dove for the ball. The team leading eighth homer of the year for the Saints shortstop gave the Saints an 8-3 lead. The Saints could not hold the lead. The Catamounts plated two in the fourth and five in the fifth to take a 10-9 lead. A bases loaded three RBI double by a .185 hitter in the nine hole of Potomac State’s order gave the Catamounts the lead.

JT Bean led off the sixth with a triple and tied the game on a Tyler Hill sacrifice fly. Seward took the lead in the top of the seventh when Willie Gustin doubled home Eddie Williams. But Potomac State (37-11) chased home two more two out runs in the bottom of the seventh to lead 12-11. Seward’s Tanner Rainey and Gustin singled with two outs in the top of the ninth but Barrios struck out to end the season.

The Saints finish 2-2 at the JUCO World Series.
