Golf Carts Discussed At Special Meeting

Liberal City Commissioners met last night for a Special Meeting to discuss the use of golf carts on city streets. Since Commissioners Carlile and Koochel were both absent from the meeting, the commission did not have a quorum and no action could be taken. Mayor Denoyer, Vice-Mayor Long and Commissioner Harrision along with the City Attorney Shirla Mcqeen, Police Chief Sill and City Manager Mark Hall discussed possible use of golf carts on city streets and the requirements and restrictions as to their use. Since there was no quorum, City personnel, along with the 20 some concerned citizens in the audience, came up with a proposal that was equitable for all parties, and would be placed on Tuesday nights agenda for consideration. Some of the items discussed were, registration and insurance for the carts, fully licensed drivers only, carts cannot use Kansas and Western Avenues, 15th and Pine streets, or 54 highway or any street or road where the posted speed limit exceeds 30MPH. Carts must also take the most direct route to and from the golf courses, and if operated after dark, must be equipped with working head and tail lights. There are other guidlines as well, which will be drafted into an ordinance an placed on the August 11th agenda.
