Standley Leaving Soon

Liberal’s head football and track coach Wade Standley is leaving sooner rather than later. Standley is leaving for Norman North High School May 1. Former LHS track athlete and 2002 LHS graduate Caleb Cline is his likely successor according to Liberal High School Athletic Director Scott Hinkle.

"Coach Standley is going to leaving the first of May," Hinkley said. "Caleb came to me and asked if he could get involved in the track program. My first reaction was absolutely. Caleb is going to spend some time with coach (Gary) Cornelsen the next couple of weeks. Caleb has been going out to track practices and making his presence known."

Football coach Cliff Abbott also will bring Cline in to coach football next fall. Hinkle says Cline will fill in nicely. "Caleb’s going to step in on the boys side when coach Standley leaves," Hinkle said. "More than likely he will retain that position next year. We’ve always tried in Liberal to tie in football with track and sometimes it’s been a good fit and sometimes it hasn’t. The bottom is that you have to have somebody who’s passionate about Liberal High School athletics."

Liberal’s next meet is April 22nd at Holcomb.
