Seward Dominant in Wins Over Dodge City

KSCB News - January 23, 2011 8:22 am

The Seward County Lady Saints had yet to really put the clamps down on an inferior opponent, until tonight that is. The Lady Saints used an early 12-0 run to jump ahead of the Dodge City Lady Conquistadors Saturday night in the Greenhouse and kept the pressure on all night, taking a 32-15 lead into the locker room at half before bouncing the Lady Conqs back to Dodge by the count of 69-42. The Lady Saints shot 47% as a team on the night while holding Dodge to just 26% shooting. Morgan Skomal led Seward in scoring with 16 while Kelsey Willson added 11 and Ashlynn Knoll and Mariah Lee chipped in 10 a piece. Seward is now 14-6 overall and 4-2 in Jayhawk West Conference action. On Wednesday they will head to Garden City to take on a struggling but dangerous Lady Busters team before returning home on Saturday to battle with Butler.

Coming off of arguably their best all-around game of the season many wondered how the Seward County Saints would perform Saturday night when conference rival Dodge City came to town. Historically a close matchup, the Saints showed early that they wanted nothing to do with history this time around. A chatty and fired up Conqs team was quickly cut down to size by the Saints who bolted out to a 23 point halftime lead thanks in part to a 28% shooting period by Dodge. The Saints didn’t let up in the second half, shooting an even 50% from the field while building their lead to 33 at times. Dodge would score some buckets late to make the score look closer than the game really was but nevertheless the Saints would go on to win 92-65 to remain atop the Jayhawk West standings. Seward had five players reach double figures in the win including Jeremy Jones who again led the team in scoring with 18. Phil Hawkins tied a career high with 17 while Rafriel Guthrie pitched in 16 points and 8 rebounds. Daveon Boardingham finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds while Marky Nolen posted his 3rd straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. All 11 Saints dressed for the game scored and 10 had at least 1 rebound. Seward stays on top of the Jayhawk West as they improve to 5-1 in the conference and 17-3 overall where they we be when they go to Garden City on Wednesday to take on the Busters.
