Another Heartbreaker in Hays

Liberal vs. Hays seems to bring out the best in both teams. Last year, Hays beat Liberal in double overtime 52-47 in the Big House. Friday night, Hays clipped Liberal after a last second shot to win it was waved off in a 47-45 Hays win in front of a packed house in Hays. A rim rattling dunk by Jade Cathey in the first half helped buoy the Angry Red to a 9-4 lead and an 11-7 lead after one quarter. The Indians (5-2) would lead by as many as six in the second quarter (22-16) and led Liberal 24-21 at halftime. Liberal dominated the third quarter leading 35-30 at the end of three. Liberal would build an eight point lead (43-35) with 4:30 to play. Liberal had the ball in a 45-45 tie before an offensive foul was called on Liberal about 40 feet away from the basket. Hays guard Trey Herman got a runner in the lane to rim in with 2.4 second remaining. Liberal’s shot attempt (which missed anyway) was waved off and after the buzzer. Jade Cathey scored 12 in the loss. Liberal head coach Drew Gruver says his guys gave a great effort. "The ball just went the wrong way tonight for us," Gruver said. "I asked the guys after the game, are we a worse team because we lost this game? I don’t think we are. We’ve got to keep a good attitude. It’s one game and we have another tough one coming up on Tuesday. "
