SCCC/ATS PLan Extra Security Training

Safety and Security Supervisor Dennis Mulanax is working with college President Dr. Ken Trzaska to craft and schedule a four-part training process to get employees on campus on the same page in regard to safety and security.

It’s important to keep things simple, Mulanax noted. He knows from his experience as a law enforcement officer that high-stress situations make it hard for people to think clearly.

His goal is for everyone on campus to have a basic understanding of how to stay safe by following the steps of “Run, Hide, Fight” in that order, as necessary.

Response drills are just one piece of an overall approach the College will use to solve problems instead of treating symptoms. Such drills will most likely take place during the spring semester.

Mulanax also urged students and team members on campus to acquaint themselves with information that�??s already available on the college website and in paper booklets posted on bulletin boards around campus. If we want to work or study in safe places, he noted, we each have to take it upon ourselves to make it safe.

The most important element that makes all the other options work is being attentive to the environment, the people around us, and being willing to share information. Instead of avoiding difficult conversations because we don’t like conflict, Mulanax said the college community needs to get past the discomfort.
