Six Points in Liberal to get Facelift

KSCB News - July 17, 2015 8:16 am

The Kansas Department of Transportation expects a concrete pavement reconstruction project at a major intersection on the east side of Liberal to begin by Monday, July 20. The intersection, known locally as Six Points, carries more than 15,000 vehicles a day on U.S. 54 and U.S. 83, along with two local streets that pass through the intersection, Bluebell Road and Second Street.
The multiple legs of the intersection, increasing traffic volumes and deteriorating pavement have combined to hamper traffic flow. In addition to improvements on U.S. 54 and U.S. 83, the project will permanently close Bluebell Road and Second Street at the intersection. The plans call for building an extension of Fifth Street east of the intersection to provide a connection to Bluebell Road going east.
The project will be built in phases. Phase 1 will focus on pavement reconstruction on U.S. 83 north of the intersection. Lane widths will be reduced to 11 feet on this section of U.S. 83 during this phase of construction. Drivers approaching the intersection should expect to slow down and be prepared to stop.
J-A-G Construction Co. of Dodge City is the primary contractor on this $1.8 million project, which is funded through a combination of KDOT’s Geometric Improvement Program and the City of Liberal. KDOT expects work on this project to be completed in April 2016, depending on weather.
If you have questions on this project, you may call Mark Hall, City of Liberal, at 620-626-2201.
