Seward County Farm Bureau Gives to Scholarship Endowment

Seward County Farm Bureau brought farm animals, food demonstrations and lots of small children to the campus of Seward County Community College/Area Technical School March 25. The annual Farm Education Day event began as a way to preserve the agricultural way of life and, in the words of Seward County Farm Bureau President Carolyn Quillin, “help children understand where their food comes from.”

Bright yellow buses brought first-grade students from Liberal and area elementary schools to the SCCC/ATS agriculture building, where they enjoyed a close-up look at horses, goats, chickens, and a nifty milk-cow simulator that allowed them to try their hand at milking.

“I grew up on a farm, and the things I know are slowly vanishing from the lives of children,” Quillin said. “If farmers are going to keep their way of living, they need to start educating this younger generation.”

Quillin says she knows the effort has paid off when children correctly answer the question, “where do your hamburgers and chicken nuggets come from?”

“They’re so happy when they know to say, ‘cows and chickens,’ not the fast-food chain,” she said. “That makes me happy, too.”
