Kansas Board of Regents Find Questionable Practices at K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – An audit has revealed numerous instances of questionable transactions during the administration of retiring Kansas State University president Jon Wefald.

The Kansas State Board of Regents released the audit Friday. The regents said the report, conducted by the firm Grant Thornton, was done to assist the new administration at the school.

The report found that Wefald delegated many responsibilities to the former vice president of Institutional Advancement, Bob Krause, leading to a “blurring of the lines” between the entities Krause oversaw.

The audit also detailed conflicts of interest in the operation of a business incubator at the school and raised questions about how employees in the athletics department were paid.

Note: Liberal’s Donna Shank is currently the chairwoman of the Board of Regents. Shank told the Manhattan Mercury newspaper that she hoped that public release of the document ‘will end speculation and rumor regarding these issues.’

Shank also said the board has directed new KSU President Kirk Schulz to report to the board by October regarding any actions he takes in response to the audit.
