USD 480 Board of Education Meets

The USD 480 Board of Education met Monday for a regularly scheduled meeting at the Education Service Center. One of the items discussed in the meeting that was a non-action item was the possibility of purchasing a cell phone jammer to use at Liberal High School. This would work effectively at interfering with the signal that cell phones use to communicate. The reason for purchasing this would be so the teachers would be able to focus more on teaching then on checking to see if students are using their cell phones to text. The cost for the jammer would be between $400 and $600. The item will be an action item at the next meeting.

Action items on the agenda that were approved were stage risers for Liberal High School, Work comp insurance, the 2009-10 Heartspring Contract, Laptop Carts for LHS, the Avaya phone system, amending board policy on the IHA grading system, fire alarm system upgrades, and certified transfers and certified and classified employment and resignations. All of these items passed 6-0 with Bob Maier absent.

The board also instructed LHS principal Keith Adams to ask the National Honor Society committee to look into amending the standard that allows students into the NHS. The board would like to make sure that students who take honors classes are not penalized. The board will meet again on Monday, June 22 for the last meeting before the board re-organizes in July.
