Donation helps Seward County 4-H Foundation

KSCB News - April 11, 2012 4:34 pm

LIBERAL, Kan. With an estimated nine billion mouths to feed by 2050, the future of farming depends on America’s youth. Organizations like the Seward County 4-H help turn these ag youth into community and industry leaders who will be able to meet the challenges of our growing population. Thanks to one local farmer and America’s Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM, the Seward County 4-H Foundation can continue to help its members learn the proud tradition of American farming for the second year in a row. Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations. Carol Zimmerman was the winning farm family in Seward county, and she designated the money to the Seward County 4-Hers. "4-H does a lot with the city kids out of Liberal, teaching them different things through programs and projects which all tie in with ag,” Zimmerman said. “It’s important as we are in the middle of nothing but agriculture in our part of the country!" The Seward County 4-H Foundation will use the $2,500 to assist its members in feeds to attend leadership camps, workshops and trainings. Each 4-Her will match the designated funds that come from the Monsanto Fund donation. In a ceremony held Monday, April 9, at the Seward County Extension Office, Zimmerman presented the Foundation with the $2,500 donation. Through America’s Farmers Grow Communities: Farmers in 1,245 eligible counties have the chance to win $2,500 for their favorite community nonprofit organizations. The Monsanto Fund has invested more than $3.1 million to rural communities this year alone. A list of all winners and more information can be found at www.growcommunities.com Grow Communities is part of a broad commitment by the Monsanto Fund to invest in farm communities such as Seward County. It aims to highlight the important contributions farmers such as Zimmerman and her family make every day to our society.
