Suspicious Events Around State Capitol

Police say several homemade bombs were found in a suspicious vehicle parked near the Kansas Statehouse.

Capitol Police Spokesman Patrick Saleh said Wednesday that officers arrested the owner of the vehicle in a nearby state office building that’s connected to the Statehouse by an underground tunnel.

Saleh also said another man was arrested and questioned after allegedly phoning in a threat from a Topeka motel to Gov. Sam Brownback’s office.

Saleh said the two incidents are unrelated.

The suspicious vehicle was found Wednesday morning in the parking lot of the Kansas Judicial Center, south of the Statehouse. Saleh said items in the car, including an empty gun holder, raised suspicions.

Capitol police then called in the Topeka Police Department’s bomb squad to investigate.
