Local Soldier Experiences Horror of War in Iraq

KSCB News - November 30, 2011 1:48 pm

There is bravery among us. A husband, father, a soldier, and a recipient of two purple hearts after being attacked in Iraq lives and works in Liberal . Liberal resident and 2001 Turpin High School graduate Sergeant Tyler Antrim was twice under attack of Improvised Explosive Devices and says the call home after those attacks is difficult.

"Your first instinct is when there is a chance to be able to go to a phone you do it. Luckily when we finally got to that spot we were able to use the phone. You want to tell them so bad but you really don’t want to tell them because you don’t want to bring the fact that it’s real there. It just brings it more home for them and puts them in more stress back home than they are already in."

Antrim has a wife, Tracy, and a young daughter, Cadence.

The National Guard truck commander has been deployed twice to Iraq , once for 18 months and this past year for 14 months. His group was attacked again on August 9. He says the second attack was worse than the first.

"This one was one of the biggest I’ve ever seen or felt. It’s just one of those things. I thought I was going to make it the whole deployment without seeing anything. We were able to just keep on going. It was one of those things you never want to feel but we felt it again."

Antrim currently works for the county and remains enlisted in the National Guard. Antrim was a guest during Monday mornings Live From Broadcast Square. The show airs weekday mornings from 9-9:30 on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net.
