Finney County and state officials have been searching for years for a U.S. Treasury bond that was bequeathed to the county’s library in 1984.
The bond was given to the library by Earl C. Brookover Sr., founder of Brookover Feed Yards in Garden City. At the time, it was worth $3,888. Officials estimate it is now worth $60,000.
He placed the bond with the Garden National Bank and a copy was buried in a time capsule, with was unearthed in 2008.
Despite efforts by Garden City, Finney County and state officials, no one knows where the original bond is.
The bond might have been lost because the Garden National Bank has changed hands four times in the last two decades.
