Dry Conditions Mean No Fireworks In Finney County

KSCB News - June 7, 2011 11:06 am

It will be a little quieter Fourth of July holiday in Finney County.

County and fire officials say dry weather conditions prompted them to ban the sale and use of fireworks for the upcoming holiday.

Garden City Fire Chief Allen Shelton, who is Finney County’s fire coordinator, told commissioners Monday that the possibility of fires is high this year because of extremely dry weather conditions. Commissioners unanimously agreed with his recommendation to ban the fireworks.

The city commission typically waives a Garden City ordinance and allows fireworks in the city from 10 a.m. to midnight July 3 through 5.

Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue says he will ask the Garden City Commission not to waive the ban this year.
