Garden City commissioners are considering changing the city’s air service provider to stem declining use at the airport.

City officials commissioned a passenger study at the municipal airport because passenger numbers have been declining in recent years.

In a meeting on Tuesday, Aviation Director Rachelle Power said the airport could improve its passenger count if it chose a southern route, rather than current daily flights to Denver.

The study found only 8 percent of daily travelers in southwest Kansas use the Garden City airport. It also found that Dallas is the top destination of those travelers.

Currently, Cheyenne, Wyo.-based Great Lakes Airlines serves Garden City. The commission on Tuesday reviewed four bids submitted by airlines interested in providing service at the Garden City airport.
