Kansas Gov.-elect Sam Brownback opposes a
quick repeal of this year’s sales tax increase.
Brownback said Thursday he doesn’t think the Legislature should
repeal the tax increase next year.
The idea has been floated by Rep. Owen Donohoe, a Shawnee
Republican, in a letter to colleagues.
The state sales tax rose from 5.3 percent to 6.3 percent in
July. Outgoing Democratic Gov. Mark Parkinson said it was necessary
to prevent deep cuts in education funding and social services.
Brownback, a Republican, wouldn’t endorse the tax increase, but
he said the state has to balance its budget.
He said he opposes repealing the increase “at this time.”
