6A Power Blue Valley West Sweeps Liberal

The Liberal baseball team knew what they were getting into.  The championship banners adorning the sidewalk on the way into Blue Valley West’s baseball field make it abundantly clear, these guys are good.  The Jaguars have won the past two 6A state championships.  But Liberal scheduled the Jaguars to test themselves with regionals a week and a half away.  The Jaguars won two seven inning games 7-2 and 9-0 Friday afternoon and evening on Blue Valley West’s sprawling campus in Overaland Park.

In game one, the Jaguars scored two in the first, three in the third, and two in the fourth.  LHS scored two in the fifth.  Liberal’s defense was leaky with four errors.  BVW out hit LHS 6-5.  Brooks Kappelmann went 3 and 2/3 with five strikeouts and two walks allowing four earned runs.  Alex Schwindt pitched 1/3 scoreless and Blayden Betts went two scoreless innings.  Brooks Kappelmann was 2-3 with an RBI in the loss.

In game two, Liberal had three hits while the Jaguars had nine.  This was tight game most of the way.  Blue Valley West scored one in the second and one in the fourth.  But the Jaguars blew the game open with five in the fifth and two in the sixth.  Erek Lira threw three innings allowing two runs.  Aiden Miramontes went 1 and 1/3 and no earned runs.

Blue Valley West is 18-4 and Liberal is 11-10.  Liberal hosts Dodge City Tuesday night at 6pm on 1270 and 92.3.
