A new report offers a grim assessment of the shape of the Kansas winter wheat crop.
Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 40% of the wheat is in poor to very poor condition, with about 35% in fair condition. Just 23% of the crop was rated in good condition and only 2% excellent.
The report cited concerns among Kansas farmers about lack of moisture and snow cover this winter as reasons for the deteriorating conditions.
Monday’s report also estimated freeze damage to the winter wheat at 1% severe, 7% moderate and 17% light. About 75% had no freeze damage.
